Well, instead of reading for my essay, I've taken the mature approach to life and have been reading through S7S. Pirates, Swashbuckling adventure and Skyships! The only problem I have is imaging how floating islands inter-relate with each other in a snow-globe shaped universe. The bottom is 'the blue' and both sucks in anything that touches it and spits out whole islands at a time, while seven floating island-states are scattered through the setting's seven skies.

So, I thought about methods of mapping, and the whole 3D angle made my head hurt. I then thought of Diaspora, and voila...

The trade routes of the Seven Skies.

That's wonderful. You should post that on Story Games. It'll make Chad happy.

I posted them on the S7S Yahoo group and on the wiki and he's already said he's quite pleased with it.

Strangely enough I have recently been reading a couple of books on the same theme. They're both sort of steampunk. I'll have a look for them and post up the titles here.

Looks like we're playing this next week if you're OK with that. Any player prep needed or particular state of mind to bring to the game?

Is it a bit like Lady Blackbird, although using the same system as Truth & Justice (which some may remember from a game in the pub about 2 years ago, London based superheroes hunted by the Government for crimes against the state).

Humm ... decisions, decisions. I am tempted to resurrect my old Truth & Justice character from the group "The Dwarves of Death" but nah. The vibe I am getting for Swashbucklers of the Seven Skies seems to be feral mice ... or P0rn St*rs.
Either way the character will have to have a R'lyeh guardian as a pet (Yes it's a mini me).

Didn't really take time to read up on the game but I did have a quick look at the character sheet. Interesting. Do the abilities, 'Foible' and 'Techniques' bear out WK's assertion that this game is all about P0rn St'rs.

Also what's 'Ephemera' and I want as many 'Miscellany' as it is possible to have. I don't know what that is either but it sounds impressive.

    Hi all,

The setting info for S7S is here and is only about 4 actual pages of stuff. The rules are here. There are a couple of differences from T&J, from what I gather, but nothing major.

Think psuedo 18th Century-ish sky pirates, floating islands, living within an immense snow-globe-shaped universe, grand balls, swashbuckling and duels, fighting over a ladies honour, magic and that sort of thing.

The basic setup is that you're privateers with a letter of marque and a flying ship, tasked with "waging war upon the enemies of the Kingdom of Colrona..."

We'll do character generation together as it only takes about 20-30 minutes.

    Now, the questions...

Feral mice, P0rn st'rs and R'lyeh gaurdians? Sigh.
Foibles? Negative character aspects that earn style (fate) points when played.
Fortes are effectively Fate aspects and represent a positive aspect, a "noteworthy talent, skill, relationship, or resource of a character"
Techniques? Aspect that you can use with Fortes to add a bonus.
Ephemera? Temporary bonuses you gain through play.
MIscellany? Basically anything your character wants at character generation. A big estate in the country? Your father's sword? Captain's Rutter? Miscelany.

I'm looking forward to this. Do we just play pirates or can we be, you know, cat-burglars and stuff?

Absolutely fine to play a catburgler type character, as long as the concept fits the broad swashbuckler theme. In terms of being sailors, you'll just need one sailor-ish forte.

Unless you've had a good look at the rules and know that the 'cat-burglar' is a character you can happily use what about a pirate that specialises as a sailor? Or at least a sailor that has a weath of experience of calmbering up and down the mast and and the ratlines and through the rigging? I can't rememer the name of the trade but it's a sort of sea-going steepljack. And with any experience as pirate thrown in he would probably know all he needs to about opening locks.

Doesn't sound very piratical to me. Where would the Spanish Main be if Edward Teach had said: "Sorry, can't buckle the swash tonight, I've got to chair the PTA meeting" ?
